Wow. What a ride this presidential election has been! With less than a month to go, things are getting a little crazy. We love politics at our house, and we often talk about the different candidates and watch the debates. I love to hear my kids' perspectives. They are hilarious and insightful at the same time.
I don't know if you are happy or upset with the two main candidates, or if you are looking at a third party choice, but I DO know that there has been a lot of fighting on Facebook and other social media sites about it. Here are some questions I have seen lately:
I have scoured Youtube to find quick videos that describe the process. Though they may have a lot in common, I think each has something to bring to the table.
A careful study of history will show you that despite what is commonly bantered about, the United States is a republic, NOT a democracy. It was designed that way on purpose, though recent legislation has been slowly trying to change that.
I think all viewpoints are worth listening to. You can use these to show your kids how context, different information and perspective are important, and how they shape our opinions. It also helps us to understand those on the other side of the fence better.
I took some time during fall break to watch and discuss these with my kids. We took about half an hour and watched and talked. It was pretty interesting, and we all learned a lot.
Anyway, I wanted to give you a good variety of choices. Have fun!
This is a general explanation by TED. If you only watch one, this is the one to watch. I learned something new when we watch this one!

Third Party Candidates
Community Question: I was personally disappointed by the analysis about 3rd party candidates' chances of winning. Was there anything you agreed/disagreed/were disappointed about?
Hi, I'm Jen! I adore chocolate, I'd rather read than clean my house, and I haven't seen my abs in I-don't-know-how-long. But I love my husband and kids to death and try to Raise The Good within myself and my family by making wise and uplifting media choices and having a deliberate family culture. You are probably doing the same thing. Let's share what works with each other!
