Talking about something is easy; doing it can be harder. But not here! This website is designed to be “plug and play”--we’ve done all the research and hard work for you.
We are big believers that we become what we focus on, what we immerse ourselves in, and what we choose to consume. That is why we have so many amazing resources--we want that pool to be deep. Here is a brief description of each component of the website to help you use it more effectively.
We have organized this website by topic, by age and by medium. So if, for instance, little Johnny is a little ungrateful sometimes and needs to learn about gratitude, you have several options. You can search for “gratitude” in the search bar, look at resources at his age level, decide how much time you have and pick an appropriate medium. Lots of time? Try a family read aloud. Friday Night Movie time? No problem--we’ve got you covered. What if you only have 5 minutes? Our Youtube clips can teach an amazing lesson in a short amount of time. Easy peasy.
Ways To Raise
Our Ways to Raise are topics that we feel are especially important in becoming a “whole” person. Here’s the breakdown:
-Character is a must--everyone agrees on that. Honesty, hard work, forgiveness, compassion, etc. are the backbone of all successful people, families, communities and nations. Without character, the order that comes with moral law and discipline crumbles and the world is thrown into chaos. Character creates. It touches all of our relationships and makes them better. It even makes us like ourselves better.
-Citizenship: Every nation, and ultimately the world, is a reflection of each home and the people who make it up. Doing our part, contributing and getting along with others is important. Understanding how government works and how to influence it, knowing how to effect change, recognizing your impact on the world, giving back, and appreciating different kinds of people all fall into this category.
-Education: We marvel and find joy as we learn about the earth, the universe and other wonders. We learn from history about the consequences of actions, and are less likely to repeat sad lessons from the past. We learn and are inspired from great minds and great lives. We are less likely to be taken advantage of and to be manipulated if we develop critical thinking skills and understand the people and world around us. As we learn, we are more free, by analyzing and evaluating wisely. Additionally, we become self sufficient economically, lessening our reliance on others.
-Faith is hope in, and accountability to, a Higher Power. It is our deeper “why” to how we live. It is basing our actions on a higher law that man made laws often imitate, but cannot enforce. Character finds it’s roots here. It is the basis for our (the authors) lives. Raise the Good honors all loving religions and denominations.
-Goals and Dreams consist of getting to know yourself, your special talents and attributes. It is understanding what you can contribute to the world, and how to do it. It is planning ahead for success, learning how to work around difficulties and ultimately crafting the type of life you want to live. You only get one life--do what matters most and make it count.
Our Hero Spotlight is an especially inspiring portion of the website. This is where we feature real heros (Marvel movie characters need not apply) and share their stories with you. We become like those we spend time with. And we intend to spend time with some of the best people who have ever lived. Some of these people you may know: Mother Teresa, George Washington, Gandhi... you get the picture. We will also feature less well known men and women from the past with such fascinating stories, that you will wonder why they are not household names: Ernest Shackleton, Father Damien, Helmuth Hubener, and more.
But…(and this is what really excites us) we also feature normal, non-famous people in our neighborhoods who do heroic things every day--and we are excited to hear your nominations! The mother who for 20+ years has taken care of her completely disabled son; the Scout master who spends countless hours teaching boys how to become responsible men; the grandmother who has devoted her life to helping her children and grandchildren; the father who sacrifices so his children can have opportunities he never had--all of these people are bonafide heros in our view.
We want to illuminate the sacred meaning and happy consequences that come when regular people quietly go about doing good. Angels are all around us, and we want to recognize, thank, and be inspired about them. This also serves as a reminder that, (at the risk of being cheesy, and to quote Whitney Houston), “a hero lies in you”--and being rich, famous, good looking, or being able to fly has absolutely nothing to do with that.
Coming Soon! We will also have other posts to help use this website effectively:
-how to hold great book and movie discussions with friends and family
-movie filters and ratings
-making education and learning a lifestyle, not just something that happens at school
-Using faith throughout the week, and not just on your day of worship
Please let us know if there is anyway to make this website easier to navigate, if you are looking for a particular resource, or if you have a question. Also, if you have an awesome resource we haven’t posted about, let us know so we can share it! Whatever the reason, we would love to hear from you.
Thanks for being part of The Good.
Hi, I'm Jen! I adore chocolate, I'd rather read than clean my house, and I haven't seen my abs in I-don't-know-how-long. But I love my husband and kids to death and try to Raise The Good within myself and my family by making wise and uplifting media choices and having a deliberate family culture. You are probably doing the same thing. Let's share what works with each other!
