I am a brand ambassador for Sonlight.com (because I love them so much!), and I am excited to share their products in this post. To learn more, please click here.
Sometimes it is absolutely luxurious and amazing for our kids to have all the time in the world to read and explore new characters, new ideas and new worlds. Or by contrast, it's absolutely irritating because if they've read all of their recommended titles, and aren't sure what to read next, they can pick really dumb books from the library, or accidentally get books that don't reflect their values. That's not so amazing.
I want my kids to read excellent literature that is fun, clean, teaches them about life, and that captures their imagination. And this year, I found the perfect solution that will do all these things, AND help you build a wonderful family library.
Sonlight's Summer Readers Series
Sonlight has been one of my favorite companies for years. (I rave about them here and here.) They have amazing book selections for family read alouds, homeschoolers, afterschoolers, and now-- summer readers!
Sonlight is a company that focuses on family togetherness and education, and their goal is to bring families closer to God. Now, this doesn't mean that every product at Sonlight will make you feel like you are in Sunday school. A few will, but most won't. They are just excellent, clean books. But I love that I never have to worry about the content in ANY of the books that Sonlight offers. The writing is excellent, the stories are both original and classic, and each book becomes a friend.
Isn't that the best?!
This year, we decided to try their Summer Reader sets. I have to admit that originally I was a bit skeptical of the idea of summer readers. Just get a book already! But these books have hit that sweet spot of high quality fun and adventure that just screams "summer". We ordered the elementary boy set, as well as the high school boy and high school girl sets. I am in love. Each set has 4-5 books in it. The fun part too, is that these don't HAVE to be for summer reading. Birthdays, Christmas, surprises . . . these books would be a great gift anytime of the year.
I started reading the teen sets for fun a week ago...and I'm on my fourth book. I might have a problem. ;) (And I'm super tired from staying up waaay too late!) I've been in a reading rut lately, and I have loved reading these new-to-me books.
I have read from both the high school boy and girl sets, and I think both genders would enjoy each collection. I've been holding them in reserve for my teens (waiting for life to slow down a bit), so they are just getting started on them. But I found one of the books in the bathroom, and another on the coffee table-- finding them scattered around the house is always a good sign!
My reluctant second grade reader couldn't put down his book until he finished it. Then he started with another one. He loves some of the silly humor he's found so far, and I know he'll love the detective stories he hasn't started yet.
All in all, I'm sold. I think these summer reader collections will be a perfect tradition to add to our annual "Last Day of School Party" where we go out for giant ice cream cones and celebrate the beginning of summer.
Hi, I'm Jen! I adore chocolate, I'd rather read than clean my house, and I haven't seen my abs in I-don't-know-how-long. But I love my husband and kids to death and try to Raise The Good within myself and my family by making wise and uplifting media choices and having a deliberate family culture. You are probably doing the same thing. Let's share what works with each other!
